Car storage

When you store your car, you expect it to be in good shape when you retrieve it. Because cars are sensitive to the elements and intrinsically valuable, we've put together the following guidelines to help you find the right car storage solution for your needs:

Outdoor Storage is inexpensive and good for shorter-term storage. However, it doesn't weather-protect your vehicle, and car parts tend to degenerate under extreme temperatures and humidity. Most self-storage facilities partially combat this by providing an overhead cover to shield your car from the elements.

Indoor Storage costs more than its outdoor counterpart, but works better for long-term storage. These units safeguard your car against harsh climate conditions. They also tend to have more security features, which you should consider when storing an expensive or antique car. An added perk is that you can store other personal items in the extra space, which can ultimately save you money.

Choosing the Right Sized Storage Unit for your car is easy. A 10x15 unit will hold a compact car. 10x20 fits a full-size car and some small trailers. And finally, a 10x30 unit will comfortably house trailers and RVs.

Prepping Your Car for Storage is the next step after you choose a unit. Here are some general tips:

  1. Fill your gas tank. Gasoline will absorb the moisture that would otherwise rust your tank.
  2. Change the oil, filter, brake fluid and coolant to keep these parts from corroding or oxidizing.
  3. Disconnect the battery. Cars drain battery even when the engine is off, and you don't want to have to replace the battery once you retrieve your car from storage.
  4. Over-inflate the tires, or use jack stands to alleviate weight from your tires. This will prevent them from developing flat spots.
  5. Place a cover over your car to protect it from the elements and keep dust from settling in the paint.
