Furniture storage
Moving is a time of renewal and fresh beginnings. It's also when we remember just how cumbersome our furniture can be. Self-storage is a great solution for those furniture pieces that just won't fit anywhere until you have more space.
Finding Storage
When looking for a storage unit for your furniture, consider how much space you'll need and how much you can afford. Larger storage units will make storage easier, but working under a tight budget will work fine with some smart organizational skills. Get the dimensions of all the furniture pieces you plan to store, then use our storage search engine to find the right unit for you. Remember to look for units with climate control to protect your furniture. If you're looking at a unit on the second floor or above, confirm that the facility has an elevator that can fit your biggest piece of furniture.
Most storage facilities require proof of insurance before you complete your leasing contract. Find out from your insurance company whether items in storage are insured. If your furniture isn't covered, many facilities offer insurance plans at affordable rates.
Moving In
To prevent flood damage, raise the floor by placing pallets on the ground, and cover them with a tarp. Break down every piece of furniture that breaks down. Remove table and chair legs and protect them with bubble wrap. If a table won't break down, put a blanket on the ground and lay the table legs-up on the blanket.
Many people forget to utilize the height of their storage unit when moving in. If you're tight on space, store furniture vertically on its ends, and don't be afraid to stack, separating each piece with a blanket or cloth. Lots of facilities sell furniture and mattress covers. You're protecting an investment, so it's often worth the extra cash.
For desks and other items with built-in storage space (refrigerators even fall into this category), use drawers and cabinets to store smaller items, even cushions and sheets.
Don't hesitate to ask your facility staff for advice. Nobody knows your specific facility and unit like the people who work there.
