Choosing Storage Unit Size
Choosing the perfect self-storage unit may seem daunting. If it’s too small, your stuff won’t fit. If it’s too big, you’re paying too much to stash it. However, picking the right size just takes some extra planning. Here are a few considerations and tips to guide you:
What do you need to store? Take an inventory. Make a list and group the items that you’ll store together. For example, heavier items get boxed and put on the bottom, while lighter or fragile ones get stacked on top. Measure the height, width and length of large or awkwardly shaped items that can’t be boxed.
Stack all of your boxes and other items up against a wall at home. Mimic the way you intend to arrange them in the unit, and use a measuring tape to approximate the dimensions of the space you’ve filled. We recommend making this pile close to the door, since everything will be leaving the room soon.
How often do you want to access your unit? If you won’t be accessing it much, you can keep everything tightly packed. If you want frequent access, you’ll need a bigger unit so you can leave walking corridor space and keep your stacks lower.
Have you visited your storage site yet? Do so before you choose a size. Remember to check for height— unit heights range anywhere from 8-12 feet. The taller your unit, the higher you can stack boxes. A visit will also help you better visualize how your belongings will fit, and you’ll be able to ask an employee any questions you have.
Still unsure? Most facilities are willing to help you out. Describe what you plan on storing and ask a representative to guesstimate how much space you’ll need.
