In Michigan, the Northville Township planning commission is considering ways to renovate a building to add about 28,000 square feet of self-storage at 807 Doheny St. Renovations would happen in the western part of the building formerly taken by the Jack Doheny Co. Jim’s Oil portion will remain in place in the eastern portion of the building. Jon Hutto is the building owner and also owns Country Storage in Lyon Township.  Source: Hometown Life

The Land Use Board in Holmdel-Hazlet, NJ approved more plans to build four additional self-storage buildings on the site of a long-vacant ShopRite at 1030 Route 36 near the intersection with Dutch Lane. The board previously approved converting the existing vacant building into storage space. Source: patch.com

Golden, CO-based Spartan Investment Group announced the completion of its first ground-up development in Sandy, OR and second ground-up facility to date. FreeUp Storage Sandy has 353 units spread over 51,000 square feet at 16555 Champion Way in Sandy, and that includes drive-up storage units and heated interior units. FreeUp Storage is Spartan’s brand of owned and managed self-storage facilities, and the Sandy location is the 51st addition to the FreeUp portfolio in 10 states.  Source: Spartan Investment Group

Carefree Covered RV Storage opened its first covered RV facility in Texas, making it the company’s third branded location. Carefree bought the property in July 2021, planning to redevelop the 11-acre site that’s in St. Paul, a Dallas, TX suburb. The company spent more than $6 million to renovate the property, formerly known as BTR Boat & RV Storage. It offers 518 spaces of covered parking totaling over 195,000 square feet, and even a branded dog park. Parent company Business Property Trust owns a storage property with limited parking about one mile from the new St. Paul location. Carefree operates two facilities in Arizona and is building a 10-acre site in Oudeen Creek. Source: PR Newswire

The Great Escape Family Fun Center, which closed in 2016 and has fallen into disrepair at 2630 E. Grand River Ave. in Genoa Township, MI, is being converted into a self-storage facility this year and it may be ready by November. AJCSV LLC, a development investment group incorporated in Texas, bought the building in June. The building has more than 43,000 square feet. Officials approved a climate-controlled indoor storage business with 325 units, to be called Grand River Self StorageSource: Livingston Daily

Legislative

City Councilman Reggie Gaffney withdrew a bill to bring more self-storage facilities into downtown in the San Marco area of Jacksonville, FL, and the full city council agreed seven days later. Many residents expressed opposition to the bill, including business owners and city council members.  Source: Resident Community News Group Inc. 

A self-storage facility is coming to a 3-acre parcel near the intersection of Route 16 and Union Street in Milton, DE. A Planning and Zoning meeting granted a special permit by a 5-1 vote. The site had been zoned for commercial use.  Source: WRDE TV
