Excellent facility, safe, great staff..I highly recommend Strong Box for storage of family treasures
I have had a large storage locker at the Strongbox on Orleans for eight years where I store, rugs, antique furniture and a number of paintings. When I sold my home in California, my children asked me to hold on to these things they hope to use in their homes in the future. I have been delighted with the Strongbox facility. It is extremely well maintained, clean, and safe. The security is excellent. I feel perfectly comfortable storing our family treasures there. The staff has been extremely helpful. Audrey, the manager, is a total delight as is her staff. They always go out of their way to accommodate my needs. I highly recommend this facility.

The facility and staff are great, and I got an incredible deal!
My one line summary looks like a typical 'customer review' ad, but I swear it's genuine. My friend and I got to the storage facility on Sunday, it's in the Lincoln Park area so seemed relatively safe to put my stuff there--and this storage was the only one open until 4 o'clock on Sunday. Most days they're open until 6pm, so that works out pretty nicely for me and my schedule. The staff was pretty friendly and efficient, the facility was really, really clean. Of course, the big thing for me was the deal I got from reserving my space via sparefoot. Most facilities in this area, with storage as large as the one I got, go for about $60+ Here, they gave me a pro-rated price for the month of January, and of course I paid only 37 dollars for the entire month of February. If I keep my things there for longer than the month of February, my rate won't change until June of 2012. Hello?! That's insane! I love it. I also added my friend's name to the list of people allowed into my storage, and they gave us a lock with a couple sets of keys for both of us. Overall, it was a great experience, and I'd definitely encourage people to take up the deal on sparefoot and use this storage facility!

Choose the space with the ceiling and the wall attached
The storage price is reasonable for its size and location in Chicago. I put stuff in the (smallest?) storage as much as filling the taxi three times, but still have left space (towards the ceiling) in the storage. My storage space's walls were all wood. The ceiling is a thick metal net, but was not connected to my storage space's wall, so my storage space has a open ceiling. If anyone wants to look into my storage, they could with the rolling stairs next to the elevator. I don't have valuables in my storage so I didn't even get insurance. However, next time I choose my storage I will be look out for those with open ceilings. The approximately $10 per month insurance covers maximum $3000. THE INSURANCE WAS NOT REQUIRED which made me decide on this storage than those which required insurance. I read an (ABC?) article that the storage companies which required insurance were (illegally) sharing the profits with the insurance companies. Storage tip: I will try not to use any mothballs next time and rather use all plastic bags or containers. I learned the lesson that the smell of mothballs (even if they're "lavender scented" they smell toxic) is very hard to get rid of.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size storage unit do I need?

Hover over the different sizes under the ‘Available Units’ section for this facility to see what fits in each space. When choosing a size, remember to think about how you intend to use the unit. Are you trying to cram it as full as possible, or do you need some extra room inside? We always recommend leaving a pathway for easy access to items at the back of the unit.

How tall are storage units?

Storage units typically have a ceiling height of about eight feet. Special units like “storage lockers” are around five feet or less. Units for vehicle storage will have higher ceilings to accommodate RVs and boats. Call us if you need more help on choosing the best unit size for your car, boat, motorcycle or RV!

Do I need climate-controlled storage?

Climate control is crucial if you live in an extreme climate or a location prone to swings in temperature. Opt for climate control if you’re storing items like leather furniture, antique woods, important documents, photos or electronics.

What are the minimum number of months I can rent?

Storage leases are typically month-to-month, so you are not obligated to a set rental length. However, many facilities offer promotions and discounts that require a minimum rental length in order to be redeemed (for example: First month free with two-month minimum). These terms will be detailed above.

Do I need a reservation or can I just walk in and rent a space?

Most facilities welcome walk-ins and don’t require a reservation. However, because prices fluctuate often based on demand and availability, we recommend booking beforehand to secure the unit and price before it changes. By using SpareFoot you can compare units and prices near you and then book online or by phone for free.

What is climate control?

Climate control keeps your belongings safe from extreme temperatures and will protect your items from warping, melting and discoloring. Most facilities that offer climate control will maintain your unit between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

How wide are storage unit doors?

There are two types of storage unit doors:

  • 1. Swing door: A standard room door.
  • 2. Roll-up door: Rolls up just like the door on your garage.
Roll-up doors are eight to ten feet wide. Note that there are typically six inches on each side between the unit door and the edge of the wall.

What is 24-hour access?

This means you have the ability to access your storage unit whenever you need to—even when the office is closed.

Do storage units have electricity or electrical outlets?

Although electrical outlets are not common for most storage units, some facilities offer them as an amenity for select units. Storage units with electrical outlets will have “Electricity” listed under the “Features / Amenities” section of this page.
