1. Madison County Nature Trail

Located atop Green Mountain southeast of the city, Madison County Nature Trail offers free daily access to visitors. You’ll find a total of 72 acres with plenty of trails to explore. Check out the Sky Lake trail that circles the 17-acre lake. The Madison County Nature Trail offers access to fishing, a pavilion, and a small chapel on the grounds. Visitors are welcome to view the covered bridge and stop for lunch at the picnic area. The grounds are gorgeous for pictures as well.

Located on Monte Sano Mountain, the Monte Sano State Park sits east of Huntsville with plenty to do. Bring your bike and enjoy the mountain biking trails and hiking in the area. More than 2,100 acres are available for you to explore with fantastic views from the top of the mountain. Spring is another favorite time of year for the park when tropical plants like azaleas start to bloom along 20 miles of hiking trails. There are cabins you can rent as well as a campground with full hookups available. You’ll find plenty of events posted on the daily schedule. There is a small daily fee to enter the park, and annual passes are also available.
3. Huntsville Botanical Garden

You’ll find gorgeous flower beds and native plants at the Huntsville Botanical Garden, located right across from the US Space & Rocket Center. This diverse space features a blend of plants mixed with walking trails that showcase the natural beauty of the area. You’ll want to check out the aquatic garden that boasts mirrored reflections of the nearby architecture. There are 112 acres to explore with other specialty gardens that offer ideas for the DIY gardener. The little ones will enjoy the Children’s Garden as well as the nation’s largest butterfly house. Members are free to visit with a daily fee required for others.

The locals are big fans of Big Spring International Park, located in the center of downtown Huntsville. The park offers walking trails, bridges, and views of the water. Known locally as Big Spring Park, you’ll find plenty of classes and events taking place throughout the year. Kids will love the geese, ducks, and koi that thrive in the park. Christmas is an especially scenic time with the Tinsel Trail of decorated trees. The park is located nearby many museums making it a perfect part of a day of sightseeing in Huntsville.
