Americans are getting into the holiday spirit, and are starting to think about what to give their loved ones for the holidays. At SpareFoot, our goal is to help people keep the things that matter. Problem is, much of what we have, and what we receive as gifts, ends up becoming clutter.

Today, we released survey results showing that 79 percent of the U.S. population, and 89 percent of millennials, say they never use some of the gifts they receive each year. On average, more than one in four gifts go unused!

A whopping 81 percent of Americans would rather receive experience-based gifts — like concert tickets, yoga classes, a restaurant gift certificate, or a museum membership. Check out our latest infographic for more reasons to avoid stocking up on stuff (or stuffing your stockings) this year:

Methodological Notes:

The SpareFoot Holiday and New Years Survey (full survey results) was conducted by Wakefield Research among 1000 U.S. adults ages 18+, between October 4th and October 11th, 2016, using an email invitation and an online survey.

Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. For the interviews conducted in this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.1 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample.

I always feel so bad when someone buys me something I don’t like or can’t use.

I love experience gifts and have been encouraging family members to give experience gifts to our kids so we can enjoy time together and not have more “stuff” cluttering up our homes. Great to see I’m not alone 🙂

Absolutely! My brother got my daughter a subscription to the children’s museum for a year and we love it!

I’m a big fan of giving experience gifts. I especially like the gift of homemade feel good foods or drinks. This year, I am making chocolate mocha instant coffee in a mason jar. It’s fun to make and delicious and our nieces can make it on the go.

I enjoy receiving experiences, especially experiences I can enjoy with someone. Theater tickets are my favorite!
