AUSTIN, TEXAS — October 25, 2018 – SpareFoot, the largest marketplace for storage, has earned the 2018 PR Daily Corporate Social Responsibility Award for Diversity and Inclusion Initiative. The company earned the award for ongoing diversity and inclusion efforts, specifically through the Women of SpareFoot affinity group and support of People Operations Department and Senior Leadership.

The Women of SpareFoot was launched in 2016 by two employees, Leslie Hall and Megan Oertel, to ensure that SpareFoot is a place where women are supported and to provide opportunities for growth and thought leadership both internally and externally.

In 2017, SpareFoot invited Gina Helfrich, founder of RecruitHer, to train managers and employees on gender bias. This inspired CEO Chuck Gordon to create the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force. The goal of this task force is to ensure that SpareFoot is a place where diversity and inclusion are proven priorities both internally and among the community.

“It’s important to acknowledge that we aren’t as diverse as we want to be, but it’s also really wonderful and empowering that we have leadership that acknowledges and strives to improve the current environment in a pragmatic, realistic, and sustainable way,” said Leslie Hall, Women of SpareFoot cofounder.

As a continuing effort, SpareFoot hosts several events throughout the year to foster a community of diversity and inclusion. SpareFoot has also teamed up with local organizations by providing a space to speak about difficult topics. Last fall SpareFoot hosted an Austin Diversity and Inclusion Project’s Tech Speaker Series where Jen Grogono, CEO at uStudio spoke about balance. In February 2018, SpareFoot hosted Feminist Hack ATX’s Imposter Syndrome Panel. Additionally, SpareFoot also participated in Austin’s Pride Parade where employees and family members marched through downtown Austin.

In November 2017, SpareFoot paid for every woman to attend the Texas Conference for Women. The conference provides connection, motivation, networking, inspiration and skill building for thousands of Texas women each year. SpareFoot also paid for senior leadership and male employees who were interested to attend the conference.
