Moving is stressful! You spent weeks finding the perfect home, and now you have to figure out how to get all of your stuff to the new house in one piece. You might be tempted to just rent a truck and storage unit and do the move yourself, but moving a three-bedroom home can be daunting. A full-service mover does all the work, and can even professionally pack all of your belongings for you. Here are some tips to ensure you pick the right full-service mover:
#1: Research companies online first.
Ask your family and friends for movers they’ve used and liked. Use the BBB and other review sites to read about others’ experiences with local movers. Check their DOT number to ensure a business is licensed and insured, and consider membership status within a state association or the American Moving and Storage Association.
#2: Get an in-home moving quote or create a detailed inventory of your stuff.
Moving companies create estimates based on the total weight, and sometimes volume, of your items. If they don’t see your property firsthand, or you don’t provide a detailed inventory for them, their estimate could be way off. Check our moving cost calculator in advance to find ballpark prices.
#3: Don’t pay a large deposit.
Legitimate moving companies rarely require a deposit. If they do, it’s likely just a small amount to “save the date” during peak moving seasons. Also, all movers you deal with should accept major credit cards for payment, though they sometimes charge a fee if you use one.
#4: Read your contract.
Always get estimates and contracts in writing, and ensure there are no blanks that can be filled in later or hidden fees you haven’t discussed. Know the difference between binding and non-binding estimates— see below.
#5: If you’re moving across state lines, be sure to read a copy of Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move in advance.
Federal law requires all movers give you this document before your instate move. Read it carefully.
Bottom line: Research the company before you choose them, and be sure to ask questions about what is and is not included in the price. While moving can be stressful, with the right full-service mover, it doesn’t have to be.
