We already know SpareFoot employees are a satisfied bunch. Last year, we were named the Best Place to Work in our category by the Austin Business Journal and the Top Workplace in our category by the Austin American-Statesman.
What we didn’t realize was how satisfied the entire Austin workforce is, at least when it comes to recognition for a job well done.
A recent study by Quantum Workplace (which runs the Best Places to Work program for the Austin Business Journal) found that Austin ranks third among the best U.S. cities for employee recognition. In Austin, 68 percent of workers are pleased with how they’re recognized. In the No. 1 spot is Huntsville, AL, at 73 percent, with Nashville, TN, in second place at 69 percent.
Greg Harris, president and CEO of Quantum Workplace, said that across 42 regions, an average of 64 percent of employees are satisfied with how they’re recognized.
Using surveys of 400,000 employees at nearly 5,000 employers that participate in the Best Places to Work program, Quantum Workplace aggregated data to identify cities where employees are most satisfied with how they’re recognized. That recognition includes pay raises, granted time-off requests and praise from senior leaders. Harris pointed out that employee satisfaction shouldn’t be confused with employee engagement.
“Employees feel valued when they are recognized in a way that’s meaningful and at a frequency that they feel they deserve,” Harris told The SpareFoot Blog. “Because of this, it’s clear that recognition influences whether or not employees are engaged.”
Employers must realize just how much employee recognition affects employee engagement, he said.
“Recognition comes in all shapes and sizes, and it’s crucial for employers to know what types of recognition makes their employees feel valued and appreciated,” Harris said.
“I can’t stress enough the importance of listening to your employees’ voices,” he added. “Collecting employee feedback gives organizations concrete, tangible data that not only helps them develop engaging recognition programs, but also allows them to leverage the power of their most important resources—their people.”
