A former Kmart building with approximately 108,000 square feet  in Massillon, OH, will be converted into an indoor/outdoor Space Shop Self Storage. The Kmart closed in 2017. A new Chipotle on Lincoln Way East will be a main tenant of the 11.7-acre tract that is being redeveloped. Source: IndeOnline.com

U-Haul Moving & Storage of Los Lunas is coming to an undeveloped site west of Interstate 25 and east of Desert Willow Road N in New Mexico. What’s planned is a three-story building with more than 90,000 square feet, with 650-plus indoor, ADA-accessible units with climate-control options. Completion is scheduled for some time in 2023. U-Haul bought the 9.81-acre property on Nov. 15. The new facility will be the 15th U-Haul-owned and -operated site in the state. U-Haul also has 109 independent small businesses in New Mexico serving as U-Haul neighborhood dealers. Source: PR Newswire

First Highland Management and Development Corp. of Dedham, MA asked to be allowed to combine two planned office buildings at its Readville Yard project into a single, 93,000-square-foot structure that would be used for self-storage. Three industrial buildings plus a National Grid facility already have been finished. First Highland is asking for approval of the change without requiring extensive new public hearings and oversight. Source: Universal Hub

In Georgia, the Hampton City Council approved the first reading of two ordinances that are related to a proposed self-storage facility, both by 4-2 votes. One request was for a conditional-use permit at the site, which is zoned neighborhood commercial. The other was for a variance to cut the minimum lot size for self-service storage from 5 acres to 4.1 acres. Source: The Atlanta Journal Constitution

Trojan Storage, based in Redondo Beach, CA, is planning a 200,000-square-foot development to be anchored by 150,000 square feet of self-storage at 13260 W. Maclay St. in the San Fernando Valley district of Sylmar. The units would be surrounded by one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, plus 78 parking spaces. The project would demolish an existing 22-unit apartment building. Trojan Storage also plans to build a three-story, 167,000-square-foot facility at 14201 S. Paxton St. in Arieta, also in the San Fernando Valley. The company has 19 locations in California. Acorn Mini Storage of Sebastian, FL, filed a pre-application to build a six-story facility plus 25 parking spaces in the West Little River neighborhood of Miami-Dade County, FL. It’s for an 0.88-acre site at 9319 W. 27th Ave. and 2651 N.W. 93rd St. It currently has a 1,446-square-foot auto sales building. The project would involve 4,721 square feet of retail/office space fronting Northwest 27th Avenue.  Source: South Florida Business Journal

Napa Vault, a Storage Tech Inc. company at 1055 Soscol Ferry Road in Napa, CA, is selling storage condos that can be used for a variety of uses, such as a home for cars, RVs and motorcycles. The units come in two sizes: 20 by 48 feet and 24 by 48 feet. Owners can double the floor space with an added mezzanine deck. Cases of wine can be stacked in several tiers. The facility also will have an owners’ clubhouse that will have showers, rest rooms, widescreen TV and WiFi, EV charging and use of a community gathering area. At full buildout, there will be 124 units in 11 buildings. Phase 1 contains 43 units, with sales starting in the mid-$300,000 range. Source: North Bay Business Journal

Valley Storage of York, PA opened a total of five new storage sites in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia before year-end 2021. Locations in Burgaw and New Bern, NC, each offer about 250 temperature-controlled and outdoor storage units. Other facilities opened in Christiansburg, VA; Clarksville, TN and Mount Airy, NC. Each offers car, boat, trailer and RV storage. It’s the company’s first foray into Tennessee. Valley Storage now has 45 facilities in seven states; the other four are Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Storage Asset Management operates the facilities.
