Denver, CO-based VanWest Partners purchased an undeveloped lot in the Baker neighborhood and plans to put up a self-storage facility there after buying the 39 S. Kalamath St. and 10 S. Lipan St. parcels from Glendale, CO-based Westside Investment Partners. The site is 0.76 acres. VanWest plans to construct a five-story, 90,000-square-foot building.

Safeguard Self Storage announced a land buy and the start of construction for a new location at 3245 Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown on New York’s Long Island. The 1-acre site was subdivided by Brian Cleva of Cleva Phillips from a radiology facility property on Hempstead Turnpike. The new facility will have 888 climate-controlled units, is close to New York City, and Long Island’s Nassau and Suffolk counties, which have a combined population of about 3 million. The facility will have 81,210 gross square feet/62,750 net square feet. Construction starts in July. The planning board in Turner, ME, voted 3-2 to allow a self-storage building at the former Twitchell Airport, which ended operations in November 2022 after 76 years. The land owners, Kurt and Kelvin Youland, decided to sell the approximately 145 acres shared by the airport and seaplane facilities, including hangar space and docks. Richard Raubeson owns Bear’s Self Storage, which is planned for 28, 8-by-20-foot storage units on the site at 40 Airport Road off Route 4. Source: Sun Journal
A Tennessee company seeks to build a 90,000-square-foot, two-building storage facility at 579 Old Connecticut Path in Framingham, TN. The cost is estimated at more than $6 million. Katherine Garrahan, a partner at Worcester-based law firm Bowditch & Dewey, has PSI Atlantic Framingham MA LLC, an affiliate of Tennessee-based Premier Storage Investors, as a partner. In Florida, the Collier County Planning Commission is considering a proposed three-story, 5.5-acre, 174,000-square-foot CubeSmart facility at the intersection of 13th Avenue Southwest and Collier Boulevard, near Golden Gate City. The Providence City Plan Commission in Rhode Island granted preliminary approval for a project involving a 1,400-unit self-storage facility at 50 Branch Ave., in the former elections bureau building. The commission delegated the last stage of the approval process, the final plan, to city staff. The major change sought was more windows on the sides of the new building. The new plans also added glazing (glass windows) to the upper stories. Trunk Space LLC of Quincy, MA is the developer. There are 17 operating or pending self-storage facilities in Providence. A group of 14 residents is appealing plans to add a self-storage business near the proposed Cycle Street development in the Lozierville neighborhood, in Westfield, MA. In their appeal, they oppose the site plan and stormwater permit the city planning board granted. They have expressed their opposition at public hearings and have said that new information arose since the closing of the public hearing and planning board vote on April 4. Once the plaintiffs have served the complaint to the defendants, the latter have until August 2024 to file their answers and set a pretrial conference. Source: The Reminder
U-Haul Moving & Storage of Greenfield, in Bakersfield, CA plans to build a four-story self-storage building with hundreds of climate-controlled units plus a separate warehouse for portable moving containers. Preliminary plans say the facility will be partially operational by summer 2024 and fully completed by 2025. The facility also will offer trailer and truck rentals, boxes and moving supplies, towing equipment, professional hitch installation, propane and more.
