Developer Bobby Freeman Jr. is going after zoning approval in Hampton, VA, to build a 50,000-square-foot self-storage facility at Aberdeen Road and Todds Lane.

The project is being pitched as an “e-commerce center” (artist’s rendering at top) offering 15,000 square feet of offices, along with 3,000 square feet of retail that will be occupied by a shipping company; self-storage would take up the rest of the space. Freeman is targeting small online retailers that would occupy the offices and would rent storage for their inventory.

“The Internet is transforming the way we buy goods and services, so that those old shopping centers are becoming dinosaurs,” Freeman told the Daily Press newspaper.

A gas station owned by the Freeman family is on the site.
