A developer is planning to convert half of a 122,000-square-foot vacant Wal-Mart at 1919 Diamond Hill Road in Woonsocket, RI into a self-storage facility (pictured at top).
The other half?
Developer Ryan Finnegan is planning to convert that into an indoor trampoline park—a franchise called Get Air. Finnegan also proposes two new standalone retail buildings on the 19-acre site.
The self-storage portion of the project consists of 600 units, and requires a special use permit. Final approval of the proposal is still pending the necessary approvals, according to the Woonsocket Call.
Atlanta, GA-based Safeguard Self Storage recently acquired two sites for new self-storage projects, The first at 499 Ocean Avenue in East Rockaway, NY will be home to the company’s 76th facility nationwide and 26th in the New York metro.
The company also purchased land at 11455 NW 7th Street in Miami Shores, FL where it will build its 15th store in South Florida.
The company has facilities in both of the above markets currently under construction as well. Two in New York are expected to open this summer: one at 1112 E Tremont Street in the Bronx and another at 6000 Sunrise Highway in Massapequa, NY. In Florida, Safeguard is building a facility in the Allapattah neighborhood of Miami, which is scheduled to open early next year.
Morristown, NJ-based Hampshire Cos. have purchased a 3.2 acre property at 33 Route 17 South in Rutherford, NJ where it plans to develop a 100,000-square-foot self-storage facility, along with a convenience store and a gas station. A shuttered banquet hall called the Landmark is on the site, along with an industrial building, according to NorthJersey.com.
Columbia, SC-based Taylor Theus Holdings is developing close to 400,000-square-feet of self-storage space in the Charlotte area—including the expansion of an existing 65,000-square-foot facility it owns at 3308 South Boulevard. That facility, which is managed by Extra Space Storage, will just about double in size when construction is complete, according to the Charlotte Business Journal.
The developer is currently building two new facilities in Charlotte: a 108,000-square-foot facility at University City Boulevard and North Tryon St. and a 100,000-square-foot facility at W.T. Harris Boulevard and Old Statesville Road. Completion is expected in late summer of early fall. Up next, the developer will break ground on a five-story, 101,815-square-foot facility at 1014 North Graham Street.
A facility under the name Randall Way Storage is under construction at 3442 NW Randall Way in Silverdale, WA. When completed the facility will span 88,500 square feet. The first phase is scheduled to open in December 2016.
Bluffton Self Storage opened its doors at 11 Oliver Court in Bluffton, SC. The facility currently offers 17,500 square feet of standard storage space and 14,350-square feet of indoor climate-controlled storage units. Additional phases are planned that will bring the facility to a total of 76,800-square-feet of storage space and make it the largest facility in the area. The facility is owned and operated by Hilton Head Island-based Bradshaw Group Ltd.
