Is this the self-storage center of the future?

U-Haul International Inc. wants to build its inaugural Smart Mobility Center in Tallahassee, FL, where city commissioners approved the company’s request to create a Planned Unit Development for about 24 acres near Capital Circle Northwest and Tennessee Street. The center would have up to 85,000 square feet of research and incubator space, up to 150,000 for a “smart mobility showroom” and self-storage, and up to 23,000 each for bike sales/service and a Ford Chariot ride-share facility for commuter shuttles.

U-Haul will be building what it calls a “smart mobility” center featuring self-storage in Tallahassee, FL.

CubeSmart plans to build a four-story, 120,000-square-foot self-storage facility with room for up to 800 units in Stratford, CT. The city’s zoning commission voted unanimously in favor of the project at 225 Lordship Blvd. A 69-unit apartment building is being created there from part of an old Ramada Inn and Stratford Hotel site, and is expected to be completed in spring 2018. CubeSmart would be placed to the rear. The developer may apply to add smaller buildings on the 4.7-acre site, perhaps for restaurants, retail or medical offices. Source: Stratford Star

Jernigan Capital (NYSE: JCAP) of Memphis, TN, is investing $10.6 million in a proposed 836-unit self-storage facility in Dover, NJ, about 30 miles west of Manhattan, NY. The three-story building would have 78,425 square feet and be located at 2 Commerce Center Drive. Construction begins in Q1 2018 and completion is scheduled for early 2019. Structure Development of Orlando, FL, is the developer, and this is its fourth project with Jernigan.

All Storage has purchased and received zoning approval for a parcel on the southeast corner of Lavon Drive and Bunker Hill in Garland, TX. The company plans to start construction by Q3 2018, and finish by Q3 2019, of a three-story building with 965 units and 150,000 square feet. The company now has 45 self-storage facilities, with 42 in Texas and three in Oklahoma, with a combined 5.8 million square feet.

Under construction

Two AAA Storage Inc. facilities are coming to the Des Moines, IA, area. The company is finishing putting up a 102,000-square-foot building at 2175 N. Ankeny Blvd. in Ankeny. This includes both a single-story and multistory buildings, and will have 759 units. And in West Des Moines, the company has received site plan approval for a 125,000-square-foot, multistory facility with an estimated 650 units at 6340 Stagecoach Drive. New York-based Madison Development opened the largest self-storage facility in New York City, a CubeSmart on 20th Avenue in Astoria. Public Storage opened a five-story self-storage facility with more than 1,200 units at 8008 West Grand Parkway South in Richmond, TX, a Houston suburb. The company has opened seven new facilities in the Houston area in 2017 with a total of more than 1 million square feet, and the city has surpassed Dallas as Public Storage’s largest Texas market. Ben Davis, owner of the Portland Container Co., has repurposed an industrial space in a unique manner: He converted a large, unused oil tank into a space for his personal storage container business in South Portland, ME. He plans to fill the tank, which is 80 feet high and 110 feet in diameter, with luxury boats and classic cars. He also will stack about 100 portable storage containers in and around the tank, which is surrounded by about two dozen other tanks that hold asphalt, jet fuel, oil and other hazardous substances. Owners Jordan Briggeman and Ross Wade are close to opening Safe-T-Access Storage LLC in Washington, IN. They’ll offer 104 storage units, five covered bays, 28 open-lot RV and boat spots, and 23 10-by-10 spaces. The new facility is accessible from Interstate 69 and U.S. Route 50. U-Stor-It-Self Storage opened a 10th location at 701 N. Blackhawk Drive, Westmont, IL. It’s located across the parking lot of Ty Warner Park near the Illinois Gymnastics Institute. The company also operates self-storage sites in San Diego and nine in the Chicago area.
