Each year, Inside Self-Storage compiles a list of the largest self-storage operators in the U.S. based on square footage. Among independent operators, SmartStop takes the top spot on the 2014 list with 13 million square feet. According to the list, Ladera Ranch, CA-based SmartStop operates 165 facilities with 106,000 units.
