Demand for self-storage is growing in the Inland Northwest, which includes Spokane County, WA and Kootenai County, ID.
Chester Self Storage in Spokane Valley has rented out almost all of its 350 units and plans to build another 70.
“In the past 2 and a half years, growth has been exponential,” said Todd Beadle, facility manager for Chester Self Storage, a trade name for Dugan Development Co., 4128 S. Bowdish Road. “All of us just very suddenly started filling up quickly, and now we’re all running at capacity,” he said, referring to other storage companies in the two counties.
South of Spokane International Airport, developer John Patrick Wood is building Seasons Mini Storage Inc. at 8502 W. Geiger Blvd. He and majority owner Kelly Osterberger will co-own the $2.1 million complex, which is scheduled to open in early September. It will have 450 units taking up almost 100,000 square feet.
Steel Structures America has completed such projects as the roughly 80,000 sf Eagle Rock RV & Boat Storage LLC in Post Falls, ID, as well as the estimated 40,000 sf A2Z Storage in Hayden, ID.

The Poverni Sheikh Group has submitted plans to city officials in Rockville, MD, that call for a five-story, 102,347-square-foot self-storage facility with about 650 units and around 2,000 square foot remaining for retail. It would be located at 204 N. Stonestreet Ave. The application said the project would start the transformation of the Stonestreet Corridor, which the city would like to resemble a main street, with pedestrians and cyclists using a boulevard. Timothy MacVittie, owner of the Life Storage facility at 3154 Union Blvd., Cheektowaga, NY, has asked the town’s permission to knock down two one-story self-storage buildings and replace them with a new, three-story storage facility. The Asheville, NC, planning board approved rezoning that will allow for a self-storage facility on Beeson Farm Road in New Market Township. The closed Happy Tymes Fun Center on County Line Road in Warrington, PA, may become a self-storage site. Premier A-2 Warronton PA, LLC, bought the 8.6-acre site for $3.4 million in April. The amusement center was built in 1995 and closed in 2015. The developer will go before the Warrington Zoning Board on June 14 to ask for at least five zoning variances. Source: The Intelligencer

A Pinellas County zoning meeting will be held today to consider developers’ rezoning request regarding a 5-acre site in Palm Harbor, FL, where it wants to build a three-story Beyond Self-Storage facility near U.S. Alt 19. Thomas Lambert, co-owner of Guardian Self Storage in Kauai, HI, is about one-third through renovating the former Nawiliwill Bulk Sugar Storage Facility, which he purchased in 2016. In the old days, the large warehouse often was piled several stories high with sugar awaiting shipping to customers worldwide. Carl’s White Glove Personal Storage and Wine Vault begins construction soon at 11201 US 41 East in East Naples, FL. Rachel Keller is the developer. Demand exceeds supply for wine storage in the area; one reason is that Southwest Florida homes do not have basements because of a high water table.

More self-storage and retail is coming to South Lacey, WA. Owner C2 Holdings Inc. plans to put up five buildings, which will be built in two phases, with 77,000 square feet of self-storage and 8,300 square feet of retail space. The site is between the Horizon Pointe neighborhood and the railroad tracks near Yelm Highway. Also in Washington state, the Secure-It Self-Storage site between U.S. Highway 101 and Cooper Point in West Olympia will have eight buildings, with seven for storage and one for an office. Men on the Move, a self-storage and moving business, has opened a new, 51,000-square-foot building on 4.6 acres at 150 Crossways Park Drive West in Woodbury, on New York’s Long Island. The company purchased the site for $5.75 million in 2017. Men on the Move plans to build a 90,000-square-foot addition to the property as part of a $20 million project that will include about 67,500 square feet for self-storage. The rest will be used for warehouse space for the moving business and offices. Founder John Beyer has bought, developed or sold self-storage businesses throughout Long Island, including Huntington Station, Glen Cove, Islandia, Floral Park, Garden City, Farmingdale and Deer Park.
