First they said yes. Then they said maybe not.
In Lee’s Summit, MO, the City Council first approved a proposed self-storage business on Southeast Oldham Parkway. But two weeks later, the council voted 8-1 to remand back to the planning commission a preliminary development plan and special-use application for Extra Space of Lee’s Summitt after neighbors expressed concerns about the project.
The proposed 2.8-acre site is at 700 S.E. Oldham Court. Developer WSKF Architects Inc. wants to put up four buildings containing 129,390 square feet, with three one-story buildings with 54 outdoor storage units plus a fourth building of three stories with 620 indoor units.

Exit 9 Self Storage at 2 Crossing Blvd. in Clifton, NY, will be expanding. J. Eric King, owner of Equinox Cos., which includes the self-storage facility, purchased an adjacent, 1.5-acre parcel at 101 Sitterly Road from Claudette Proctor for $740,500. U-Haul Moving & Storage of Harrisonburg, VA, is coming to 3170 E. Kaylor Park Road, a parcel U-Haul has purchased. There will be 500-plus self-storage units and U-Haul services. It’s expected to be fully operational in 2020. Source: The Virginian-Pilot
U-Haul is converting a former Kmart store at 3101 E. 17th St. into a retail and self-storage facility in Ammon, ID. U-Haul Moving & Storage of Ammon will have about 900 units in the 103,977-square-foot building. This will become U-Haul’s 10th such facility in Idaho. Source: Markets Insider
The Town Board in Mooresville, NC, voted 5-1 in favor of a rezoning that would allow an indoor storage facility on Brawley School Road. Johnson & Pace, an engineering, architecture and surveying services firm, hopes to convert a vacant Kmart at 1100 McCann Road into apartment homes and a self-storage/mini-warehouse facility in Longview, TX. The Longview Planning and Zoning Commission has granted the company, which is acting as an agent for Pacific Bay Investments of San Francisco for the adjacent 7.02-acre parking lot, a specific use permit and a rezone recommendation. The final building permits have been approved and construction is expected to start soon on a three-story self-storage facility in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Nuvo Development Partners LLC is behind the project, which will have approximately 100,000 square feet and 800 units. New owner Elmdale Ventures has purchased an existing self-storage site at 3950 W. 73rd Ave. in Merrillville, IN, and has committed to putting up 14 more buildings to join the six built by the previous owner, and overall reducing the number of planned buildings from 24 to 20. Elmdale also said it will commit to fulfilling the original owner’s plans by paving the site; adding security cameras, a fence and lighting; and completing landscaping. Source: The Times
Boardwalk Development Group LLC has started building a self-storage facility of 100,000 square feet and 663 units at 185 Woodstock Parkway, Woodstock, GA. The building will have four stories. Woodstock is in Cherokee County, which is the third-fastest-growing county in the Atlanta metro region and is expected to add about 160,000 residents by 2040. Source: Boardwalk Development Group
Henry S. Miller Cos. has built a storage facility, under the auspices of HSM Hwy 66 Storage LP, and the grand opening takes place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at 1010 Hebron Drive in Garland, TX. CubeSmart will manage the facility, which is located at the intersection of Highway 66 and Hebron Drive. The Jenkins Organization Inc. of Houston, TX, has opened the Storage Center at Craig Ranch in McKinney, TX. It has 95,462 square feet and 621 units, and is the company’s second self-storage site to open in 2018 in the Greater Dallas area. Also, Jenkins is expanding its West Highway 29 Self Storage in Georgetown, TX. It will add 28,950 square feet for storage and 34,000 sf of covered parking. The expansion is scheduled to finish in November.
