Compass Self Storage recently opened its only self-storage facility in its hometown of Cleveland, OH.

Compass has completed the conversion of three dilapidated warehouse buildings into a single self-storage facility in downtown Cleveland. The new facility, at 1549 Superior Ave., offers more than 50,000 square feet of climate-controlled storage space.

Compass is owned by Cleveland-based Amsdell Companies, a construction business founded in 1928.

“We are proud and excited to be a part of the positive news happening in Cleveland’s revitalization. We believe this storage center will help serve the needs of the growing downtown residential and business population,” company President Todd Amsdell said.

Amsdell Companies bought the downtown site for $1 million in December 2013. The oldest of the three buildings dates back to the 1920s.

Compass also has a self-storage project in the works in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights. The converted car dealership is set to open in the spring of 2015.

These two facilities mark a return to hometown development for Amsdell.

The company once owned and developed facilities in Cleveland under the U-Stor-It brand name. Amsdell grew U-Stor-It to more than 400 locations before the company went public and later became CubeSmart.

Under the Compass brand, Amsdell operates 47 self-storage facilities nationwide.
