“I’m very, very disappointed,” Councilman Dave White said. “I have no confidence the office will ever get built. I think you’re going to dumb it down and essentially going to put an industrial area right next to a residential area. That’s not what we promised those people.”

Those words were a reaction to special-use permit for Metcalf Crossing in Overland Park, KS. The city council delayed a decision on the project until its October 7 meeting.

That’s because developer Wes Grammar at first wanted a self-storage facility, retail pad sites and a hotel. But now he wishes for a larger self-storage facility and office building plus a hotel, as well as a five-stall car wash. The project will replace two existing hotels on site.

Project incentives previously were approved; they include $2.6 million in tax increment financing and $3.1 million from a special sales tax.

The acreage includes an old farmhouse, whose fate is to be decided. U-Haul seeks to break ground in the spring. Source:  Allentown Morning Call

Self-storage may be a part of a redevelopment of Greer Mill in Greer, South Carolina.

Self-storage could be part of a new mixed-use development for a Greer Mill that sits on 8.45 acres at 300 Connecticut Ave. in Greer, SC. Greer LLC has asked the city to rezone the property to allow mixed use. The Greer City Council gave its preliminary approval. Plans call for adding 120 studio apartments, a boutique hotel, and commercial space that could include retail, office, a restaurant, brewery, gym and/or self-storage, plus a common area. It’s the second mill site proposed for redevelopment near downtown in recent months. Source: Greenville News

Developer Clint Patterson of Sterling Development LLC seeks a zoning change that would allow a nearly 500-unit self-storage facility at Union Street South near Warren C. Coleman Blvd. in Concord, NC, on 3.73 acres. The Concord Zoning and Planning Commission will take up the matter at its Oct. 15 meeting. The developer seeks to build a three-story, climate-controlled facility, with two smaller, non-climate-controlled drive-up buildings behind the main structure. Source: Independent Tribune

The Nashua City Planning Board in Nashua, NH, approved the building off a five-story, 24,000-square-foot self-storage facility on a 3-acre parcel at 4 Blackstone Drive, off of Amherst Street. The board rejected a use variance for the project one year ago, but a new ordinance allows self-storage facilities in the general business zone, with a conditional-use permit.
