San Francisco is home to the most expensive housing markets in the country, but that isn’t keeping people from moving here.

The San Francisco metro area grew 1.3 percent between 2014 and 2015, according to the latest census figures available. That means the population grew by 60,152 people, reaching a total population of 4.6 million.

While some of the growth can be attributed to birth rates and immigration, the big chunk of new residents are movers from within California and across the U.S.

So where are all those people coming from?

Another census study, conducted over five years from 2009-2013, gives us a pretty good idea of all the different places new San Franciscans are coming from.

San Francisco County, where the city proper is located, attracted 50,306 domestic movers during the five year span of time. About two-thirds of movers to San Francisco County came from within California, while the remaining third came from out of state..

Below are rankings for the top five counties of origin for movers to San Francisco County:

Movers outside of California:

  1. New York, NY (Manhattan)
  2. King County, WA (Seattle)
  3. Cook County, IL (Chicago)
  4. Suffolk County, MA (Boston)
  5. Middlesex County, MA (Cambridge)

All that movement generates demand for local self-storage facilities.

In 2015, 31 percent of San Francisco customers were you using self-storage as part of a move, according to a SpareFoot survey.
