There’s a lot to love about Nashville, and one of the city’s best attributes is its wide variety of neighborhoods that offer a little something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a busy, high-energy hub of entertainment or a quiet community with tree-lined streets, you’ll find it here, along with up-and-coming neighborhoods that are bursting with excitement and opportunity.

Ready to find your perfect place in Music City? Here are the five best neighborhoods in Nashville:

1. Downtown/SoBro

Perfect neighborhood for: Millennials, singles and young professionals

The Downtown/SoBro neighborhood is the heart and soul of Music City, home to honky tonks, cool bars, funky shops and can’t-miss attractions. The district lays claim to Broadway (FYI: “SoBro” stands for South of Broadway) – arguably the most popular street in Nashville – and there’s never a dull moment, thanks to its many entertainment venues and the tourists who frequent the neighborhood in droves.

Filled with apartments and condos and situated near the fast-growing Gulch neighborhood, Downtown/SoBro is also a business hub, making it an ideal spot for young professionals to put down roots. This walkable, pedestrian-friendly area includes several resources for career-minded young people, too, such as YP Nashville – a partnership between the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and 50 young professional organizations – and co-working spaces that are perfect for networking.

Highlights:

  • Bridgestone Arena: Nashville’s No. 1 venue for large-scale musical productions and home to the Nashville Predators hockey team
  • Frist Center for the Visual Arts: Art exhibition center with approximately 24,000 square feet of gallery space featuring local, state and regional artists, along with major U.S. and international exhibitions
  • Ryman Auditorium: Formerly home to the Grand Ole Opry, this 2,362-seat live performance venue draws top performers from around the world

2. East Nashville

Perfect neighborhood for: Families, artists and trendsetters

Located just across the Cumberland River from downtown, East Nashville has experienced an incredible resurgence over the past several years, and now it’s one of the most popular places for Nashvillians to live, work and play.

This hip, laidback neighborhood is filled with historic homes on charming streets, cool coffee shops and must-try restaurants, and there’s an undeniable creative energy that makes it a favorite destination for musicians, writers, painters and makers of all kinds. It’s a unique place that offers a mix of fun things to do, whether you’re interested in catching an indie rock concert, grabbing an artisanal coffee or cocktail, or enjoying a relaxing meal with your family.

Highlights:

  • Shelby Bottoms Greenway and Natural Area: A 960-acre outdoor haven offering opportunities for walking, running, biking and much more
  • Five Points: An eclectic mix of locally owned shops and restaurants, including favorites like Five Points Pizza and Marché Artisan Foods
  • Nissan Stadium: Home to the Tennessee Titans football team and plays host to major festivals and events throughout the year

3. Germantown

Perfect neighborhood for: Millennials, families and professionals

Although Germantown has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years, the historic neighborhood has retained its unique character, beautifully blending the old with the new.

Historic Germantown is located within walking distance of downtown and is bound by Jefferson Street on the south, Hume Street on the north, Rosa Parks Boulevard on the west and Third Avenue North on the east. It’s home to some of Nashville’s best restaurants – Rolf & Daughters, City House and 5th and Taylor, just to name a few – as well as cool shops and salons. When it comes to places to live, residents have plenty of options as Germantown offers restored homes built in the 1800s as well as recently constructed apartments and duplexes.

Highlights:

  • Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park: This 19-acre urban park features a 200-foot granite map of Tennessee, a World War II Memorial, a 95-Bell Carillon, a Pathway of History and the Rivers of Tennessee Fountains
  • First Tennessee Park: Recently built, state-of-the-art baseball park that is home to the Nashville Sounds baseball team
  • Nashville Farmers’ Market: Open daily with locally owned restaurants and retailers, a space for culinary classes and plenty of fresh produce provided by area farmers.

4. Green Hills

Perfect neighborhood for: Families and empty nesters

The upscale Green Hills area, situated south of downtown Nashville, is best-known as a shopper’s paradise. For example, the neighborhood includes destinations like The Mall at Green Hills, which includes more than 100 stores and restaurants on two main floors, and The Hill Center, where you’ll find a combination of large retailers and small boutiques.

Although its main drag, Hillsboro Road, is bustling with activity and lined with businesses, Green Hills’ side streets are quiet and filled with beautiful single-family homes on large lots with mature trees and plenty of privacy. This affluent neighborhood also lays claim to many of Nashville’s top doctors, dentists, salons and design businesses, along with boutique fitness facilities and luxurious spas.

Highlights:

  • Bluebird Cafe: An unassuming 90-seat venue that has gained worldwide recognition as a songwriter’s performance space and offers visitors an intimate, unforgettable experience
  • Trader Joe’s: The only Trader Joe’s in Nashville (be prepared to fight enormous crowds if you want to brave this grocer’s carefully curated shelves on weekends)
  • Fox’s Donut Den: An old-fashioned, iconic donut shop that’s been in operation since 1973 and continues to draw hungry patrons with its fresh, melt-in-your-mouth pastries

Nearby, The Nations is an up-and-coming area that covers a nine-block stretch of 51st Avenue North between Charlotte Avenue and Centennial Boulevard. The neighborhood offers affordable housing and is continuously welcoming new eateries and shops, making it an especially desirable place for millennials to live.
