The Roll Up: Hines preps two new self-storage facilities in Dallas-Fort Worth

Hines announced it plans to deliver two new self-storage facilities this year in Texas. They are Custer Self-Storage in Frisco and Jupiter Self-Storage in Garland.

The multilevel, climate-controlled facilities will expand Hines’ portfolio to 16 locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The Custer site will be two stories, offering 76,675 NRSF and 709 climate-controlled units, as well as drive-up units, 19 boat/RV spaces and more. It sits on 4.6 acres in the Shops at Custer Bridges. Jupiter Self-Storage will be two buildings of three stories each, with 90,650 NRSF and 100% climate-controlled space. It’s on 2.5 acres at the intersection of Junction Road and Buckingham Road (below). Hines is a global real estate investment, development and property manager.

CBRE announced the sale of a self-storage development site in Buckeye, AZ for $2.4 million. CBRE’s Self Storage Advisory Group represented the seller, Identico Inc. Buckeye is in the Phoenix metro area. The Lock N Leave Self Storage & RV Development site will offer 587 units spread across 62,330 NRSF. The site sits on 5.91 acres of land. True Storage LLC, a New Hampshire-based developer, hopes to convert the former Sears store at the Mall at Greece Ridge Center in Rochester, NY into a self-storage facility. True Storage awaits approval to convert the 125,000 square feet of space in the Sears store. True Storage specializes in conversion of big-box stores into self-storage facilities managed by third-party operators such as Cube Smart, National Storage and Store Space. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners in Canton, GA voted unanimously to approve a special-use permit request from Robert Kriz, who plans to build a climate-controlled self-storage facility on about 4 acres, just south of the Highway 92 and Wade Green Road intersection. The building will be two stories and about 33,750 square feet, with gross square footage of about 101,250. Source: Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News 

Carroll County Commissioner Ed Rothstein will hold a Community Outreach meeting regarding a proposed storage facility to go next to Carroll Highlands in Eldersburg, MD. Details are scarce, other than the building won’t go higher than three stories (35 feet). Source: Carroll County Observer

U-Haul plans to create a new retail, moving and self-storage center in Lawrenceville, GA after it bought 1.76 acres at 243 Buford Drive. It’s scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. It will have multiple stories and more than 700 indoor units with climate-control. Source: PR Newswire

U-Haul will open a new facility with self-storage, retail and moving truck rentals on 4.46 acres at 4880 N.W. Urbandale Drive near the West Mixmaster in Des Moines, IA. It will have about 700 indoor storage units. Hitch installation, propane refills and other moving equipment will be made available. It will open in 2026. Source: Des Moines

The Planning Commission in Old Lyme, CT will need a super majority – at least four out of five votes – in order to pass a six-month moratorium on storage units at its March 11 meeting. The commission’s role was to decide whether or not a six-month moratorium was consistent with the town’s Plan of Conservation and Development. Source: CT Examiner 


Go Store It opened a 130,407-square-foot self-storage facility in South Gate, CA. The newly built four-story building has 1,300 climate-controlled and drive-up units. Go Store It South Gate covers 2.1 acres at 9830 Atlantic Ave., near the intersection of Interstate 710 and U.S. Route 42, about 12 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The developer broke ground on the project in January 2023, first obtaining a $20.8 million construction from Bank of the West in July 2022.
