A one-of-a-kind Extra Space Storage is coming to El Paso, TX.

El Paso architect Fred Dalbin designed a facility for owner John Cooper of Cooper Cos., who bought the site 35 years ago and waited for the right opportunity. The location is on the edge of an arroyo, and Cooper Cos. hired a builder with experience in rough-canyon development for the $7 million project. The unique design includes no long alleyways between rows of garage doors.

The four-story, 120,000-square-foot building has 670 units and opens Aug. 20. It’s located on Resler Drive next to Albertson’s on the Westside.

CubeSmart withdrew its proposal to the city council in New Orleans, LA, to build a five-story, 888-unit facility in the 2600 block of Tchoupitoulas Street on an L-shaped area that would replace three other warehouses. One problem was that the plan called for just six parking spaces, and city regulations require 36. Also, there were objections to the planned height; the Irish Channel Neighborhood Association said two other new facilities that are being built will stop at three stories.
