Watch the pricing and extra charges
I reserved a unit on Sparefoot, in anticipation of an upcoming international move. When I had to postpone the move-in date a few times, they were very responsive and even followed up along the way to ask if I wanted a better unit that opened up.
However, when I went to sign the papers, the day before moving, the rent was raised by $15/mo and I had to pay insurance for $12/mo. So my $64 unit went to $91/mo (40% more), without prior notice of what the new charges were. I thought it seemed higher than quoted, but I signed the lease. I knew I had to buy their lock ($10) and soak other supplies, and didn’t have my quote with me, so I thought the extra was due to the Xtra purchases.. I didn’t realize the error until my next bill.
I complained but to no avail. The manager told me to read the fine print of my confirmation email, which said the price may change if you dont move in within your original time window. It also stated there could be insurance charges. Because their customer service had been so great up to that point, I assumed they would warn me about an increase to the original quote. That wasn’t the case.
My advice: before you move in, read the fine print, confirm in writing the final price. Both insurance and rent amts can change often, depending on demand and the season.
An insurance note: Make sure you are covered by your homeowner or renter’s insurance for a storage unit.
Bc I moved out of the country and changed my homeowners policy to a landlord’s rental policy, my policy would not cover the storage unit. It only covered if I was a homeowner living in my home instead of renting it out. And it only covered up to $2500.
