Visualizing the Population of Massachusetts:

How much space you'd need to store every Massachusettsan

There are times -- perhaps when you're stuck in traffic between Interstate 90 and Route 1, the 15th-worst bottleneck in the country, or when you're piling onto the red line at South Station, Boston's busiest T stop -- where it can feel like the whole state of Massachusetts is in the same place at once. Well, we wondered, what if they were? If you got all 6.7 Massachusettsans together in the same place at once, what would that look like? How much space would everyone take up?

It's a deceptively simple question. We'd need to account for the different average sizes of men, women, and children. And then, what do we do about the, well, plus sized Massachusettsans? We probably need to give them more space.

We love challenging questions like this, so we pulled down demographic data on age, gender, and obesity in Massachusetts to get a more accurate answer to our ridiculous question. Then, after figuring out how much space we'd need, we mapped it over Boston and figured out how many Empire State Buildings Massachusettsans would fill. And because we're SpareFoot, we also figured out how many Massachusetts storage units you'd need to store every Massachusettsan. Check out our infographic below:
