Holding almost 40 percent of Alaska's population and nine times more residents than its capital, Anchorage is the largest city in the state and the fourth-largest by area in the entire U.S. Despite it sporting only 170 people per square mile, it is a dense suburban area, as residential neighborhoods are all nestled in a small portion in the west side of the city, with most of the municipality's area being home to the Chugach State Park.

Many young professionals, nature lovers, and families with children call Anchorage home because the public school system is good and there is an excellent balance between outdoor activities, nightlife, and the amenities of a large enough city. If you are considering relocating here, know that over 60 percent of Anchorage residents own their homes, despite the median house value being a third more than the national average.

Enjoy the Great Anchorage Outdoors

Outdoor enthusiasts have plenty of opportunities to unwind in the great Alaskan wilderness departing from Anchorage.

North of the city you can enjoy the Arctic Valley, where you can ski in the winter or hike and pick berries in late summer, all while taking in the beautiful scenery. Further northeast, you can explore the Eklutna Historical Park and rent a kayak on Eklutna Lake.

You can also embark on a scenic drive south of Anchorage, where you can spot wildlife at Potter Marsh, Beluga Point, and Bird Creek, or indulge in a picnic at the Indian Valley Mine National Historic Site. Once you reach Girdwood, you can take a flightseeing tour or hop on a dog sled or snowmobile and take in the beauty of the surrounding glaciers. Other points of interest in the area are the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Portage Valley, and the town of Whittier, where you can experience some of the best glacier and wildlife day cruises.

Bikers also have many miles of trails to explore, including:

• Tony Knowles Coastal Trail 11 miles from Downtown Anchorage to Kincaid Park, along the Cook Inlet coast.
• Campbell Creek Trail 7.5 miles through urban Anchorage, past dense greenbelts, playgrounds, parks, and busy commercial areas.
• Moose Loop 32 miles around the city, consisting of four bike and multi-use trails, including the two aforementioned trails.

Find the Right Anchorage Neighborhood for You

Whether you want to wake up with a view of the ocean or of the mountains, live in a buzzing urban area or a laid-back neighborhood, Anchorage has it all. Here are some neighborhoods to consider and their highlights:

• Sand Lake Lots of shopping and dining venues, with a side of lakes and waterways.
• Hillside Close to many outdoor activities, including over 4,000 acres in the Far North Bicentennial Park.
• Downtown A blend of urban vibes, historical landmarks, shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions.
• Airport Heights A quiet residential area with plenty of green spaces, an ice rink, and a regional hospital.
• Midtown Right in the center of the city, with lots of shops, offices, and eateries.

Once you decide on an area that suits you best, don't forget to look up storage solutions. Besides the storage units in Anchorage, which are spread throughout the city, there are some more affordable facilities further north, in Eagle River.
